SELF-HEALING
The Working Principle of Homeopathy

Highlights of the working principle
*Like cures like
*Small stimuli activate the forming of HSP = heatshock proteins= recovery proteins
*Strong stimuli (like regular medicins) brakes the recovery proteins
*Mechanism can be seen as vaccination post

This artistic reflection on the similia principle in homeopathy hangs in the entrance of VSM Geneesmiddelen bv. The artist Mieke Oldenburg created it in 1981 on the occasion of the opening of the new building in Alkmaar. At the bottom part it depicts an original, stylistic image that explains the relationships of the base principles of homeopathy. It reflects the central role the similia principle plays in homeopathy beautifully. We therefore call it ‘The Similia Picture’.

1. The remedy trial (red arrow): determining the working principle by testing it on healthy volunteers.
This is overhead shown with figure a, who receives remedy b to then develop a couple of symptoms as shown in figure c.

2. The similia principle (like cures like)
is shown above as figure d, whose complaints seem to very much resemble those of the healthy volunteer.

3. The use of dilutions, which are called potencies. If these potencies are used, based on the principles above, we call it homeotherapy.
The preparation of the potencies is depicted above, with the zigzag arrow from b towards e

Because homeopathy and then notably the similia principle, is a serious point of discussion in the scientific world, extensive research into the similia principle has been going on for years.

The film "On your Own Strength: Current scientific knowledge about homeopathy and self repair/healing’ that is broadcast underneath, was made after 8 years of research at the University of Utrecht by cell biologists Dr. Roel van Wijk en Dr. Fred Wiegant (the film lasts about 25 minutes). They took up the challenge to see if the similia principle at cell level could be proven. Their research was done between 1990 and 1998. In 1998 their findings were shown to a wider audience, but as often happen in science, the time was not yet ripe for it. Now, more than 15 years later, their research and the relationship with homeopathy are still up to date.

Dr. Roel van Wijk and Dr. Fred Wiegant proved that a small quantity of an originally poisonous material could strengthen the self-healing mechanism at cell level. And it worked even better if the material used, resembled the poisonous material with which the cells were lightly intoxicated. They showed that our self-recuperating ability reacts unexpectedly positive (parodoxal) to dilutions of poisonous materials. They proved with his research the similia principle at cell level.

Recently, in a lecture about the latest developments in homeopathy and the body’s self-healing ability, Dr. R. van Wijk explained this principle excellently with what he calls the ‘vacuum-cleaner-cord-principle’. We all know the handy invention of the vacuum cleaner cord that by just pulling it a little rolls itself into place after use. You could compare that with self-recuperation. If, however, this rolling into place, gets stuck (which happens now and then) you should not try to push the cord back into the vacuum cleaner (regular medicine approach, based on correction from the outside), but just pull the cord a bit again (homeopathic approach, small, similar doses directed to stimulating self-repair) so that it can re-wind itself properly into place.

On your Own Strength

I am sure you will understand the working of homeopathic remedies better after watching.

The initiative for this research was taken by VSM Geneesmiddelen bv, where I was responsible for the Department of Research and Development at the time.
